Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often.

Why does KeyThock need Input Monitoring?

KeyThock needs Input Monitoring to detect key presses while you type in other apps, so it can play a sound instantly. It uses only the physical key identity and whether the key went down or up — it never stores what you type. You can grant it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring, or from the prompt inside the app.

I granted permission but I don't hear anything.

Open the Diagnostics panel in KeyThock to check audio output, Input Monitoring status, and the keyboard listener. If you just granted Input Monitoring, fully quit and reopen KeyThock so macOS applies the new permission. Also confirm the app isn't muted (menu bar) and that your output volume is up.

Do I need an account to use KeyThock?

No. KeyThock has no account system and no server. Open the app, grant Input Monitoring, and start typing — everything is stored locally on your Mac.

What macOS version is required?

macOS 13 (Ventura) or later. KeyThock runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

How do I change the sound pack?

Click the KeyThock menu bar icon and pick a pack from the popover, or open the Sound Packs tab in the settings window. Built-in packs include creamy, clacky, thocky, bubble, normal, plastic, marbly, poppy, and clicky tones.

Can different keys make different sounds?

Yes. Open the Keys tab, click a key on the keyboard layout, and cycle through the samples in the active pack. You can make Space deeper than the letters, give Enter its own hit, and so on.

How do I import my own sounds?

KeyThock imports custom packs as local .thockpack, .zip, or folder bundles from the Sound Packs tab. The pack is copied into the app's Application Support folder and stays entirely on your Mac.

Can I mute KeyThock temporarily?

Yes. Use the menu bar controls to mute KeyThock or set a quick mute timer when you need a quieter session.

Does KeyThock record or store what I type?

No. KeyThock uses key identity and press phase only to pick a sound, in real time and in memory. It does not store typed text, reconstruct words, log raw key events after playback, read the clipboard, take screenshots, or send anything over the network. See the privacy policy for details.

How do I delete everything?

Drag KeyThock from your Applications folder to the Trash. Your settings and any imported sound packs go with it. Because there's no server, there is nothing else to delete.

I want a refund.

App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by us. Request a refund through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Where can I read the privacy policy?

The full policy is at /keythock/privacy. Short version: everything stays on your Mac — no accounts, no analytics, no ads, no server.
