Common questions
What does EngineEar require?
EngineEar is designed for iPhone and iPad on iOS or iPadOS 18 and later. Microphone access is required to record an engine sample. Core analysis works offline.
How should I prepare for a recording?
Park in a safe, well-ventilated place, keep clear of moving or hot components, follow the on-screen placement guide, and reduce wind, voices, music, and nearby machinery. Never hold the device where it could fall into the engine bay.
Which tests are available?
Quick Check records about 15 seconds at a warm idle and is included. PRO adds the guided Controlled Rev and Cold Start workflows, which collect longer samples under specific conditions.
Why was my recording rejected?
The quality gate can flag audio that is too quiet, clipped, dominated by wind or voices, interrupted, or otherwise unsuitable. Follow the displayed correction and record again.
What does an EngineEar result mean?
A result describes acoustic patterns and possible sound families detected by the current on-device model. It is preliminary evidence, not proof of a cause, a mechanical diagnosis, or a statement that a vehicle is safe to drive.
Is EngineEar PRO a subscription?
No. EngineEar PRO is planned as a one-time, non-consumable App Store purchase. It adds advanced tests, expanded garage and history, comparison, inspection, service-book, and export tools. Apple shows the current local price before purchase.
How do I restore PRO?
Use Restore Purchases in EngineEar settings while signed into an Apple Account that has access to the purchase. Apple validates the entitlement.
Can I keep or delete recordings?
Yes. You control saved tests and recordings inside the app. Delete an individual test or vehicle, or use Reset to Factory Settings to clear EngineEar's local records. Exported files and device backups must be managed separately.
How do exports work?
Supported records can be exported as PDF, WAV, JSON, or CSV. EngineEar creates the file locally and presents the system share sheet. The destination you choose then controls the shared copy.
Does EngineEar upload my engine audio?
No. Acoustic analysis runs on the device. EngineEar has no QnSub backend, remote AI service, advertising, tracking, or analytics SDK. Read the privacy policy for details.
